School Profile
Twin Lakes is a K-5 elementary school located in El Monte, in the San Gabriel Valley. As you are walking through the school and round a corner, suddenly before your eyes is a rainbow of colors, shapes, sizes and fragrances. Greeting you are 3 child-like murals of bright primary colors of joyous designs.
You notice a bench in one garden hidden in the flowers. It's inviting you to sit, think, and wonder. You have entered the "Garden Zone" a place where curiosity is invited, touching is encouraged, imagination is welcomed, and learning blooms. The gardens provide opportunities for students to have pride in what they raise, and a chance to concretely see the mechanics of how food transforms from seed to the dinner table.
Academic success of our gardens is reflected in the students' writing, artwork, math, and science concepts stimulated by this "hands-on" approach. But the real success is seeing and hearing the excitement of our students as they work, explore, and learn in our gardens.
Twin Lakes Wins 2005 Edison International Energy Education Award
Southern California Edison honored the school with the 2005 Edison International Energy Education Award for its environmental efforts. In addition, the school was granted $2,500 and a large banner to display.
Edison officials were impressed with the passion the students at Twin Lakes have for the environment, and their dedication to ensure that all recyclable materials are reduced, reused, and recycled at the school.
