MVSD's Annual Community Fair

Mountain View School District’s Annual Community Fair Promotes Wellness and Nutrition

Mountain View School District’s (MVSD) Annual Community Health Fair – A Passport to a Healthier You! provided families and community members the chance to learn about health programs and resources available in the community.  Held at Madrid Middle School, hundreds of people turned out to obtain information on available services, take advantage of the free dental screenings for children 12 and under, talk with professional providers and get assistance with health insurance enrollment.

“It’s wonderful to see so many people take part in this worthwhile event,” said Angelica Sifuentes Donoso, MVSD’s Director Family Engagement and After School Programs.  “We greatly appreciate our many health and wellness partners for collaborating with us and being here to provide our families with vital information that will help improve their health and quality of life.”

Participants were also treated to excellent entertainment by students from MVSD schools.  Taking the stage to entertain the crowd were the Madrid Middle School Jazz Band, Maxson School’s Folklorico Dance Group, Cogswell School’s Cheer Squad, Miramonte School’s Ballet Folklorico group and Kranz Intermediate School’s Marching Band, Drill Team and Tall Flags.   The artistic talent of MVSD’s students was featured in the Art Gallery which included a display of exceptional artwork from each school.

Families from schools throughout the District had a good time visiting the many booths and gathering important information on health, wellness and nutrition.  And, there was an abundance of fun as games, relays and physical fitness activities took place on the field and face painting and a photo booth provided plenty of smiles.

Participants in the Community Fair included Anthem Blue Cross, Asian Pacific Healthcare Venture, Blue Shield of California, Care 1st Health Plan, Citrus Valley Health Partners/GEM, Colgate Bright Smiles Bright Futures, Los Angeles County Office of Education’s Health Outreach Program, Molina Healthcare, the WIC Program, MVSD’s Food Service Department and Nutrition Education Obesity Prevention (NEOP), ChapCare Health Services, the El Monte Promise Foundation, and the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS).  Also on hand were representatives from Bike SGV who provided free bicycle repair and information on several biking events and classes in the area, and Day One, a community-based nonprofit organization with a 26-year history of providing effective, high quality and culturally-sensitive public health education, intervention, and policy development offered information on its many programs in the community.

The Mt. View High School Teachers Preparation Academy (TPA) students were exceptional volunteers, taking care of the face painting and providing support where needed, and Madrid School’s Leadership students also provided outstanding support throughout the event.

To encourage those in attendance to visit the community information and resource tables, a passport with all the stations was handed to each visitor as they entered the fair.  Once the passport was completed it was turned in for a raffle ticket and a chance to win prizes.

MVSD is committed to student wellness and is dedicated to students’ health, well-being and their ability to learn.

“We are happy to provide this wonderful event for our families and the community,” said Lillian Maldonado French, MVSD Superintendent.  “It succeeded in presenting health and nutrition awareness, physical activities, fun and also complimented learning through the arts with our student performances and student art work displayed.  We are grateful to our community partners for the wonderful collaboration and supporting our efforts to ensure our students and families have the resources they need to be healthy and well. ”
