Two Madrid Middle School Art Students Named Winners in Water District’s “Water is Life” Poster Contest
The Upper San Gabriel Valley
Municipal Water District (Upper District) recently sponsored its annual “Water
is Life” art contest for students throughout the San Gabriel Valley. All eligible entries were displayed during an
Upper District Board meeting where Board members, staff, and public attendees
voted for their top five choices in the grade level categories. Two Mountain View School District student
artists from Madrid Middle School had their art pieces selected and will be
recognized at an Upper District’s Board of Director’s meeting in early June.
The award winning artists are 8th grade
students in Sue Parszik’s art class at Madrid.
Alexis Garcia was named a 1st place winner and Janessa
Guerrero was awarded 3rd place in the 6th-8th
grade category. Garcia’s award includes
$150 cash prize and Guerrero will receive $75.
The Upper District sponsors the annual
contest to encourage youth to express the value of water through their artwork.
The Upper District Board believes a picture can be worth a thousand
words when trying to convey how precious water really is to our lives. Through
their artwork, students remind us to consider how we use water today and to
think about whether there will be water available for their future.
Garcia and Guerrero were both excited to
learn their posters were selected as winners in the contest. They know the importance of conserving water,
especially during these times of drought and hope their artwork inspires people
to do their part to conserve and keep our water ways clean.
