It was an exercise frenzy
at Miramonte Elementary School as students, staff, parents and family members
participated in the school’s annual Exercise-a-thon fundraiser. Students spanned across the blacktop exercising
with hula-hoops, jump ropes, footballs, soccer balls, basketballs and parachutes
and danced to the fun music loudly playing over the campus. The
two-hour Exercise-a-thon was held to raise funds for various programs at the
school. The kindergarten through 6th
grade exercisers had fun participating in the high energy event, showing off
some great moves.
“This is a great event that helps raise
money for our school,” said Jeanette Salinas, Miramonte principal, as she
danced with the students. “Our students
really love it and it brings us all together to support our school, have fun,
and get some exercise too.”
Along with the non-stop exercising,
laughter was abundant as students danced to songs like “You Don’t Know You’re
Beautiful” and “Stitches.” Several Conga
lines moved throughout the blacktop and everyone had a fun time doing the
popular Chicken Dance and Macarena.
“Exercising is fun! Said Lily, a fourth grader. “Jump rope is my favorite and I hope we earn
a lot of money for our school. I also
like seeing our teachers and principal dancing.”
For Victor, a second grader the entire
event was fun.
“I like all the stuff we are doing,” he
said. “Dancing, jump rope, throwing the
balls, doing the parachute and being out here with my friends is fun.”
Miramonte School earned the 2014 and 2015 Bronze
National Healthy Schools Recognition Award from the Alliance for a Healthier
Generation. The school is part of the
Alliance for a Healthier Generation Healthy Schools Program, an evidence-based
initiative to create and sustain healthy environments where students can learn
better and flourish. The Healthy Schools
program helps schools improve physical education, health education, and
nutrition, and has impacted more than 14 million students nationwide. Miramonte has been successful in transforming
its campus into a healthier place, meeting the rigorous healthy school
benchmarks established by the program, which led to the prestigious awards.
