Declining Enrollment and Maintaining Financial Stability
Force MVSD to Close Four Schools
After extensive thought and discussion, the Board of Education took action on January 21, 2021 to close Voorhis Elementary School, Cogswell Elementary School, Madrid Middle School/District Office Complex, and Kranz Intermediate School.
The extremely difficult decision to close these four schools and the District Office was necessary to maintain the District’s financial stability due to declining enrollment, as well as other state-level fiscal issues impacting the District.
The school closure decision is a result of a two-year process that included intensive research, data and recommendations from the District Facilities Advisory Committee comprised of teachers, support staff and parents from various school sites.
We will continue working with the MVSD community as we move forward with the school closures and transition process, ensuring the continuation of Mountain View’s outstanding instruction, academic standards and special programs, as well as accommodating transportation needs for our students and families for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year.
This difficult decision saddens us deeply, and we are grateful for the rich history of these schools and the many students, staff and parents who, for many years, created something special at Voorhis, Cogswell, Madrid and Kranz. By supporting each other and working together we will see our way through this difficult transition and Mountain View will continue to be the heart of our community.
