Saturday Language Enrichment Program a Success

In an effort to expand its existing Biliteracy program across the District’s 12 schools and offer diverse language opportunities to students, the Mountain View School District partnered with Cultural Bytes Interactive Language Program to provide a Saturday Language Enrichment Program in both Mandarin and Spanish.

Targeted for students in Transitional Kindergarten through 1st grade and their siblings in 2nd through 5th grade, the goal of the program was to create interest in MVSD’s existing Biliteracy program along with future Dual Language Programs.  Held at both Payne and Twin Lakes schools, the seven week program offered 180 minutes of language instruction once a week on Saturdays.

Instructors in both Spanish and Mandarin implemented their language curriculum that included the four domains of language learning: reading, writing, listening and speaking.  Students were able to interact and be engaged in Spanish or Mandarin through culturally rich song, dance, and craft activities; interactive game based language learning; and differentiated language learning opportunities.

“We were very excited to offer the Saturday Language Enrichment Program for our students,” said Margarita Gonzalez Amador, Director of Curriculum, Instruction and English Learners.  “The students really enjoyed the instruction which not only promotes cultural awareness and language acquisition in their native language but does it in a fun and exciting way.”
