Tammy Capilla Named District’s Teacher of the Year

     Tammy Capilla, a Special Day Class (SDC) teacher at Madrid Middle School is Mountain View School District’s 2019-2020 Teacher of the Year.  Capilla is an exceptional teacher who provides tremendous support to the 6th through 8th grade students in her class.   She has been a valued member of the MVSD team for 11 years as a dedicated teacher and also lending her expertise to colleagues as a Technology Teacher Leader. 

      Capilla was recently honored at the Los Angeles County Teachers of the Year Awards Banquet in Universal City.  Proudly joining in the celebration were MVSD Board members, Christian Diaz, Jacqueline Saldaña and Cindy Wu, Mountain View Teachers’ Association president, Laura Gaber, Superintendent, Lillian Maldonado French, Assistant Superintendent of Personnel Services, Dr. John Lovato, Madrid Middle School Principal, Juan Castillo and Capilla’s son. 

       Throughout her tenure in MVSD Capilla has served her school and the district in a variety of ways including participating in the California Health Youth Curriculum review and recommendation, being a co-facilitator of Madrid’s GSA, and serving as the Mountain View Teachers’ Association Equity and Human Rights Chair. 

      As a teacher she sets high expectations for her students and creates a classroom environment where they are nurtured, treated with respect and taught to believe in themselves.  Year after year her students thrive because of her well planned instruction and care.   

      “Tammy is an exemplary teacher who puts the needs of her students at the forefront,” said Lillian Maldonado French, MVSD Superintendent.  “She cares deeply for each of her students and each day supports them in their social and academic development, placing no limits on learning.  We are grateful she is part of the Mountain View team and we are proud to honor her as our Teacher of the Year.”
