Baker School Hosts Family Math Festival

Baker School Hosts Family Math Festival

Baker School recently hosted a Family Math Festival, welcoming students in grades TK through 5th and their families for a night of fun, hands-on educational math activities provided by California Math Festival.

Working side-by-side, students and family members tackled challenging math problems at 12 different activity stations.  Facilitated by Baker staff members and representatives from the California Math Festival, the activity stations used everything from beans to balances as participants completed money math, fractions, puzzles and more. The stations were designed for all ability levels and provided thought-provoking and fun ways to complete Common Core Math Standards.

For many of the participants completing the math activities together was the best part of the Math Festival.

“I like math a lot and working on the problems with my Dad was fun,” said Nahum, a 4th grader.   “The number chart hunt was my favorite activity.”

Each student in attendance was given a Math Goodie Bag with grade level appropriate math resources, and face painting and raffle prizes were also part of the festival.

Baker School principal, Sylvia Rivera was pleased with the turn-out for the Family Math Festival.

“We greatly appreciate our families coming out to our event to celebrate math together,” said Rivera.

“The Math Festival is a great way to show our families some of the concepts our students are learning in class and also that math is fun and can be practiced in their own lives every day.”
