District Host's 5th Annual Walk to School Day

District Host's 5th Annual Walk to School Day

Mountain View School District held its 5th Annual Walk to School Day event, themed “Walking to a Healthier Future – Be Kind, Be Well” on October 2, joining schools from around the world to celebrate International Walk to School Day.

Hundreds of students, parents, family members, teachers, staff members, volunteers and community leaders, including South El Monte Mayor, Gloria Olmos gathered bright and early at six different meeting locations before beginning their walk to the school sites. The “walking school buses” were impressive as they lined the streets making their way to each of the District’s 12 campuses cheering and holding signs and banners promoting wellness and kindness. Led by adult volunteers, crossing guards, and members of the L.A. County Sheriff and El Monte Police Department, students and other walkers showed their commitment to be physically active, healthy and kind.

“Our Walk to School Day is such a wonderful event,” said MVSD Superintendent, Lillian Maldonado French, who joined walkers at Mt. View Park.  “Walk to School Day is a great way to promote being physically active as well as showcase the importance of having safe routes to school. Having Mayor Olmos and other community leaders join us to walk to school enables them to see the routes our students and families take as they navigate their way to and from our schools.”

MVSD was proud to partner once again with Active SGV, Day One, and El Monte Promise for the Annual Walk to School Day event.

According to David Diaz, from Active SGV, in addition to promoting wellness, Walk to School Day events raise awareness of the need to create safer routes for walking.

“It’s imperative to have safe routes for walking and biking in the community,” said Diaz. “Events like Walk to School Day emphasize pedestrian safety, traffic congestion and concern for the environment and also build connections between families, schools, and the broader community.”

La Primaria teachers, Janette Salce and Nora Eskew, who have participated in all five of the District’s Walk to School Days, accompanied the La Primaria Cubs from Zamora Park to their school.

“Walk to School Day is a fun way to bring our schools and families together,” said Salce.  “It’s a great way to start the school day and it’s so wonderful to see students, parents, grandparents, siblings, teachers, principals, staff and community members all walking to school together.”

Monte Vista School’s walkers proudly walked down the street with their Eagle mascot leading the way, as they made their way from Cielito Lindo Restaurant to the school on Thienes Avenue.

“It’s fun to walk to school with lots of people,” said an excited 3rd grader “It’s really early but it’s fun,” he said.

Miramonte School met up at Durfee Dental and showed a lot of school spirit as the mustangs walked to their school carrying a banner that read Miramonte Stars Galloping toward a Healthier Future.

“We are grateful to our families, staff and the Sheriff’s Department for joining us for our walk to school,” said Melissa Brown, Miramonte Principal.  “We encourage wellness every day at Miramonte and have a walking and running club and an exercise-a-thon every year.  Walk to School Day is a fun way to bring everyone together to promote being active and healthy.”

A colorful reusable water bottle was given to the first 100 students from each school to register for the Walk to School Day event and prizes including bike helmets, basketballs, soccer balls and more were raffled off to the walkers once they arrived at their schools.  MVSD’s Food Service team welcomed the walkers at their schools with water and a nutritious breakfast, ensuring they were all set to start the school day.
