Leticia Urias, a Teacher On Special Assignment (TOSA) was honored with the Bobby Salcedo Esperanza Award at the El Monte Promise Foundation’s 18th Annual Tamalada held on December 9. The Esperanza Award commemorates the life and legacy of Roberto “Bobby” Salcedo, a respected teacher and administrator and acknowledges outstanding educators for their hard work and dedication to the students they serve, as well as their commitment and contribution to the advancement of their schools, students or educational community.

Urias grew up in El Monte and is a proud product of the Mountain View School District and El Monte Union High School District.  She is honored to give back to the community that shaped her and has dedicated the past 25 years to the students and families in MVSD as a classroom teacher and TOSA.  Throughout her career she has been a strong advocate of bilingual education and has demonstrated unending passion and expertise in her work with students, parents, colleagues and the community.

While accepting her award, Urias thanked the Salcedo family for making such a tremendous impact on the community and school districts.  She accepted the award in the name of three groups, the Mountain View Teachers Association (MVTA), her own educators from kindergarten through graduate school who pushed her to excel and believe in herself, and her family for the values she was taught and their unending support.

“Ms. Urias has always been willing to jump in and support teachers with demonstrations or lending an open ear to providing a sounding board for ideas for both languages,” said Mary Aguayo, fellow teacher who nominated the honoree.  “Her tireless effort and commitment to our students, teachers and families are commendable and she is very deserving of the Bobby Salcedo Esperanza Award.”
