Madrid Students Dedicate Bulldog Spirit Week to Spreading Kindness

Kindness was the focus of Madrid Middle School’s Bulldog Spirit Week held February 20 through 23, and students and staff dedicated themselves to spreading kindness and becoming a nicer, kinder campus and community.

Kicking off the week of activities, the 6th, 7th and 8th graders signed a “Kindness Starts With Me” pledge and during the week participated in a variety of activities promoting kindness including making flower arrangements for senior citizens with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, writing appreciation letters to military personnel through Operation Turbo, and letters of hope, encouragement and healing to individuals who are sick and to students and staff at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida

Madrid adopted the slogan - Dude Be Nice, in a world where you can be anything, be kind! The entire Madrid community is striving to make a difference through kindness.  Throughout the week students viewed Powtoon Videos promoting kindness and staff members handed out kindness cards to students displaying acts of kindness which could be turned in for raffle prizes.

“Bulldog Spirit Week is part of our Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS) program and we wanted to come together as a school community to encourage kindness amongst each other, in our community and in our world,” said Melissa Rogers, Madrid teacher and PBIS coach.  “A simple act of saying hello or smiling can really make a positive difference to someone and reaching out with kindness is always a great thing.”

“Start with Hello” wristbands were given out encouraging students to show kindness by simply saying hello to someone.  Posters and signs were displayed all over campus with sayings such as “One kind word can change someone’s entire day.” “Be somebody who makes everybody feel like somebody.”  “If we all do one random act of kindness daily, we just might set the world in the right direction.”

“Showing kindness is good for the world,” said Julio Camacho, 7th grader who was busy writing letters to our military personnel.  “There are a lot of evil people in the world but through kindness we can change that.  Our generation can change it - it might be slow but we can do it.”

During the week students and staff also showed kindness by donating coins to the ICAN Coin Drive.  ICAN is an organization that supports people with disabilities and sponsors summer camps for them.   Madrid set a goal to raise $50 to cover the cost of bus transportation for one person to go to camp.

“I think having a week focused on kindness is awesome,” said Vicangelina Macias, 6th grader.  “A lot of people in the world need us to be nice and kind and it can really make a difference for someone.  I enjoyed writing letters and making flower arrangements because I know they will make others happy.”

The Madrid Bulldogs hope they set a good example with their Bulldog Spirit Week of kindness and that everyone follows their lead and works to become kinder and more considerate.  After all, kindness is a gift everyone can afford to give!
